Ship’s Office

Ship’s Office aboard USS SLATER.

The ship’s office was located on the superstructure forward of the radio shack and beside the Captain’s stateroom. In here the clerical staff known as Yeomen and Personnelmen handled routine paperwork essential to shipboard operations and personnel matters. The plan of the day originated from this office. Smooth logs were typed and the Commanding Officer’s correspondence was also handled here. All the crew’s personnel records were handled here including payroll records, training records and accrued leave allowances.  The Yeomen was someone every sailor wanted to call “friend," for it was he who issued liberty passes and pay.

A separate supply department office was located on the 2nd platform level aft on the starboard side. In this space the supply department storekeepers handled the critical logistics and supply support onboard the ship. Everything from ammunition and spare parts to food and clothing was administered out of this supply office.
